More of trying to actually learn to draw/paint from imagination and not just blindly copy the reference. I think my mechanical skill with the digital tablet and pen is good enough now, which is a huge hurdle in the beginning with any art medium. I can start focusing on studying how light interacts with form and really work on my drawing proportions without needing a reference to copy from.
With this painting I used layers and cell shading techniques to try and learn how light and shadows work instead of just picking the colors that match the reference. Then I rendered with a bit more painterly style.
